Froud Master Class Recap

Aug 28, 2012 Chateau de Belcastel 2012

The masterclasses with Brian & Wendy Froud at the Chateau de Belcastel have far exceeded our expectations. We are reeling with joy over how the creative power of these two magnificent artists was amplified by the inspiration of the historic venue. The Frouds loved teaching here, and frequently commented on what a pleasure it was to work and play in such a magical place with their new students. The participants came from all over the world: Africa, Australia, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Norway, Belgium, New York & Chicago, the United Kingdom, and France.

Brian’s class room was a private garden that allowed students to work en plein air, or within the cool shelter of a nearby ancient stone gazebo. It was a challenging class that taught technical expertise and new ways of thinking. Brian pushed his pupils to discover within themselves a new place, free of preconceived artistic notions.

Wendy’s pupils created unique sculptures after just one week; each one completely costumed and full of life .  It was  astonishing to watch the personalities of these armatured puppets manifest under the tutelage of such an attentive and nurturing teacher.

Each and every participant feels as though a whole new world opened up for them as a result this experience.

The students enjoyed an informative tour of the castle and a champagne reception.  They shared big and small adventures together while exploring the “Most Beautiful Village” below the chateau.  A wonderful dinner was prepared and served to them in the great hall of the castle, consisting of fine wines, market produce, a cheese tasting, and chocolate desserts. Brian and Wendy sat in thrones at opposite ends of the table while a  medieval minstrel created beautiful music with his collection of flutes.

The Chateau and Gallery have enjoyed fantastic publicity from French newspapers, radio and TV. This has been such a successful endeavor that we aim to do it again someday, with another established artist who is in the golden years of his or her artistic career.
